Moira is a textile artist trained at GSA and Scottish College of Textiles and is an Art and Design lecturer with 26 years teaching experience.
The workshop will consist of:
– Examples of Batik showing methods to be covered;
– Introduction to materials/equipment/dyes;
– Selection and preparation of designs/ideas to transfer onto silk/cotton;
– Experimentation of wax resist as smaller pieces for textures and backgrounds. Working with molten wax, hand drawn and dip-dyeing methods using brushes and Tjantings;
– Some basic printing and using iron fix and steam fix methods for both silk and cotton fabrics;
– Colour experimentation and mixing dyes;
– Salt & textural techniques;
– Dip dyeing fabrics in 3 colour combination.
Participants will have time to experiment on small pieces to keep for cards/backgrounds to paintings etc, using above techniques. Then move onto a larger piece/pieces, which could be attached to a cushion or framed as a picture or made into smaller pieces for bags etc.
